500–600 nm Laser Emission from Quaternary CdZnSSe Quantum Wells
Matthias Klude and co-workers have created the first semiconductor laser diode emitting at room temperature in continuous-wave mode at 560 nm, an ideal range for future plastic optical fibre communication. For his work, Matthias Klude has won a Young Researchers' Award at the recently held Tenth International Conference on II–VI Compounds. His contribution is published as Editor's Choice in this special issue of phys. stat. sol. (b) 229, 935 (2002). The cover picture shows a photograph of operating ZnSe-based laser diodes. The different emission wavelengths of 505, 528 and 560 nm (from left to right) are achieved by varying the Cd content of the quantum wells.
