The 4th Motorola Workshop on Computational Materials and Electronics was held on 14–15 November 2002 in Tempe, Arizona, USA. Focus areas were computational materials and quantum transport, including molecular electronics, and nanodevices. The cover picture shows a prototype 1 nm silicon quantum dot formed by high-temperature synthesis which luminesces in the ultraviolet at 400 nm, taken from . The proceedings of the workshop series are published in this journal for the third time, following the 2nd and 3rd Motorola Workshops in phys. stat. sol. (b) 226, No. 1 (2001), and phys. stat. sol. (b) 233, No. 1 (2002), respectively.This issue is completed by Original Papers including the Editor's Choice by M. Q. Weng and M. W.
