In spite of its simple composition and crystal structure, the ferromagnetic material γ'-Fe4N displays a remarkably rich behavior that has fascinated applied as well as basic researchers since the 1930s. It exhibits a large saturation magnetization and is a promising candidate for application as a high-density recording material. The back cover illustration refers to this issue's Feature Article (see pp. 909–928) which reviews the history of the experimental and theoretical research on Fe4N. By confronting experimental evidence with predictions from eight different flavors of Density Functional Theory, a new hypothesis on the magnetic properties of this material is put forward (© 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
