A multitude of experimental and theoretical investigations of free atomic clusters have shown that clusters exhibit unique properties which widely deviate from those of the respective bulk materials. Geometrical and electronic structure, magnetism, chemical and optical properties are different on the nanoscale. This Special Issue (pp. 999–1196) contains selected papers from the DFG Priority Programme ‘Clusters at Surfaces: Electron Structure and Magnetism’. Guest-edited by Karl-Heinz Meiwes-Broer (Universität Rostock, Germany) the issue focuses on electronic and magnetic properties as well as dynamics.
