The packing of disk-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in columnar superstructures plays an essential role for charge-carrier transport along such 1D stacks in organic solar cells and field-effect transistors. On p. 3634, Wojciech Pisula, Xinliang Feng and Klaus Müllen review concepts applied to control of the intracolumnar interactions between building blocks. The broad toolbox of peripheral substitutions allows modification of the columnar arrangement, including alkyl side chains of different geometry, hydrogen bonds, dipole moments, and sterically demanding rigid groups.
