24_11i/2012Functional Silk: Colored and Luminescent (Adv. Mater. 11/2012)

The image shows intrinsically multicolored and luminescent silk produced by silkworms that have consumed various fluorescent dyes. Methods to produce such colored and luminescent silks through post-dyeing and biological methods are reviewed on page 1388 by M.-Y. Han and coworkers. In particular, the properties, utility, and versatility of the functional silk are highlighted, as well as the molecular property-dependent incorporation of various materials into silk while it is being secreted by silkworms.
