Emulsions: Magnetic Transport, Mixing and Release of Cargo with Tailored Nanoliter Droplets (Adv. Mater. 19/2012)
Magnetically responsive nanoliter droplets enable on-demand release of encapsulated cargo using magnetic fields as an external trigger, say A. R. Studart and co-workers on page 2582. The droplets are made from monodisperse double emulsions produced in a glass capillary micro-fluidic device. Magnetic response is achieved by adding superparamagnetic nanoparticles to the inner or intermediate phase of the double emulsion. For emulsions with tuned stability, it is possible to manipulate, collect, chain, and coalesce the droplets for on-demand cargo release by modulating the external magnetic field.
