Drug Delivery: Near-Infrared Light-Responsive Intracellular Drug and siRNA Release Using Au Nanoensembles with Oligonucleotide-Capped Silica Shell (Adv. Mater. 25/2012)
NIR-responsive oligonucleotide-gated ensembles are developed on page 3309 by F.-Y. Cheng, C.-S. Yeh, and co-workers for intracellular drug delivery. Taking advantage of the NIR-absorbing character of gold nanorods, a CW NIR diode laser is employed to control cargo and drug release through the thermal dehybridization of duplex oligonucleotides. This design has great therapeutic potential, with capabilities for siRNA delivery into cells for translational regulation as well as for cytotoxcitity through anti-cancer drug delivery.
