Combining the two extreme states of superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity on the same surface in precise two-dimensional patterns opens exciting new functionalities in a wide variety of applications. In the Progress Report on page 1234, Pavel A. Levkin and Erica Ueda highlight several emerging applications of these patterned substrates. The back cover image shows a water droplet on a feather and microdroplets confined in superhydrophilic squares separated by narrow superhydrophobic barriers.
