Polyolefin-clay nanocomposites...

Polyolefin-clay nanocomposites with significantly enhanced performance have been synthesized using a novel metallocene-catalyzed in-situ polymerization approach. T. Sun and J.M. Garcés report in the January 16th issue that the nanocomposites demonstrate reduced thermal expansion coefficients, improved melt flow strengths, increased heat-distortion temperatures, and lowered gas diffusion coefficients. Their improved Young?s modulus may help these composites to compete with expensive engineering plastics (see: Adv. Mater. 2002, 14, 128-130).
