Black spots in polymer LEDs.....

Both intrinsic and extrinsic degradation mechanisms limit the long-term stability of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). J.-S. Kim et al. report in the Feb. 5 issue the nature of black spots formed on such devices based on micro-Raman studies. It is concluded that black spots, which form around pinhole defects cause a reduction of total luminance output but not of device efficiency (see: Adv. Mater. 2002, 14, 206 - 209).
