Photonic crystals....

Photonic crystals with line and point defects are desirable for application as photonic bandgap waveguides and optical cavities, respectively. P.V. Braun et al. report in the Feb. 19 issue that such defects have been introduced into photonic crystals using a laser scanning confocal microscope. High-resolution 3D patterns are created inside the colloidal crystals via multi-photon polymerization (Adv. Mater. 2002, 14, 271-274).
