There is increasing interest in using CFD to model aerobic bioreactors. The influence of various terms like lift, drag, and bubble-induced turbulence in the CFD modeling of bubble column reactors was investigated. Reasonable agreement between simulation results and experimental data was obtained by incorporating bubble-induced turbulence and a volume fraction correction term for drag.
- Numerical Analysis of Thermal Development of Laminar Flow in a Concentric Multilayer Annulus

The thermal behavior of laminar flow in a concentric multilayer annulus is investigated, emphasizing the effects of the inner radius and number of fluid layers. The change in heat transfer coefficient at the wall is found to be more evident at a small inner radius. Insertion of more than ten layers has less impact on the convective heat transfer in a layered annulus.

The competence of high-frequency ultrasound in micro-stream generation seems promising for future developments of new ultrasound equipment with higher efficiency. Velocity distribution and micromixing efficiency of 1.7-MHz piezoelectric transducers in a novel continuous tubular sonoreactor were investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics models.
- Fully Automated Weighing of Liquid Substances with a Laboratory Robot

A new procedure for fully automatic weighing of liquid substances with a modular laboratory robot, configured for the treatment of liquid chemicals, is presented. Optimization of the laboratory robot with regard to its accuracy and functionality is described and evaluated. The obtained accuracy is greater than that of careful manual weighing.
- Concentrated Fenofibrate Nanoparticle Suspensions from Melt Emulsification for Enhanced Drug Dissolution

With decreasing particle size, the activity of pharmaceutical drugs increases. Using a melt emulsification process, nanoparticle suspension are produced from micronized fenofibrate particles. Nanosuspensions with 30 % drug loading and median particle sizes of 150 nm obtained upon proper stabilization. The reduced particle size enables a significant improvement of the drug dissolution rate.
