Drosophila has been a central model system for studying the genetic control of development for nearly 100 years. With the plethora of genetic tools and their application to other species of flies, the field is now contributing additionally to understanding the development of vertebrates and human disease. This compilation of research articles demonstrates the breadth of developmental genetics research in flies and its application to other systems. The virtual issue articles are freely available online and will be updated periodically.
