The cover picture shows a representation of an artificial virus envelope, which can be formed when crystalline bacterial-cell surface layers (S-layers) are coated onto polyelectrolyte nanocapsules. The schematic behind shows the layered structures of such materials. Recrystallization on flat substrates, as well as hollow capsules, can yield novel and robust biomimetic surfaces and membranes.
