Cover Picture: Biomimetic Micropatterning of Silica by Surface-Initiated Polymerization and Microcontact Printing (Small 10/2005)

1_10/2005The cover picture shows micropatterns of silica that were generated by a combination of surface-initiated polymerization and microcontact printing. A synthetic counterpart to naturally occurring silica-forming peptides (silaffins in diatoms) was utilized to generate the patterns. The SEM image of a diatom, Stephanopyxis turris, was kindly provided by Prof. Manfred Sumper (University of Regensburg, Germany), and the cover picture was designed by Sung Ho Yang.
