OnlineOpen

OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley Online Library, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive.

In addition to publication online via Wiley Online Library, authors of OnlineOpen articles are permitted to post the final, published PDF of their article on a website, institutional repository or other free public server, immediately on publication.

An Approved Program

Our OnlineOpen program fulfils the requirements of the Wellcome Trust and the other UKPMC Funders (see ukpmc.ac.uk/funders for list of funders.)

In addition, we have an agreement with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) whereby the HHMI pays for the deposit of authors' accepted manuscripts into PubMed Central with a 6-month post-publication embargo.

For more detailed information on our policies regarding specific funding organizations, including NIH, see: Author Rights and Institutional Repositories

Eligibility
The OnlineOpen option is offered only to those authors whose articles have been accepted for publication, and only at the point when the article is accepted, to ensure that the OnlineOpen option has no influence on the peer review and acceptance process.

How it works
Authors of accepted peer-reviewed articles have the choice to pay a fee in order for their published article to be made freely accessible to all. The OnlineOpen fee is fixed at € 2500,00. The publication fee is charged on acceptance of the article and should be paid within 30 days by credit card by the author, funding agency, or institution. Payment must be received in full for the article to be published OnlineOpen.

All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

The accepted articles are prepared for publication in the usual manner and are posted online on Wiley Online Library with the full range of features associated with that journal. The articles are archived for perpetuity and are registered at relevant Abstracting and Indexing Services and at CrossRef.

OnlineOpen FAQs

How do I order?
Please complete the OnlineOpen order form at the following link (note that you should not try to order OnlineOpen until your manuscript has been accepted for publication).
OnlineOpen online order form

Can I be invoiced?
Yes. Please refer to the order form for detailed information.

I have a question. Whom do I ask?
Please email your inquiry to stm-journals@wiley-vch.de for a prompt reply.

My article has already been published. Can I order OnlineOpen retroactively?
Yes.

Is prepayment required?
Prepayment is required to activate OnlineOpen on Wiley Online Library, and deposit of your article in the funding agency's archive.

Are there any restrictions on the types of articles covered by OnlineOpen?
The OnlineOpen program covers primary research articles (including short communications). Review articles are not eligible.

Are OnlineOpen articles available in Early View?
The OnlineOpen program is available for EarlyView articles once their complete bibliographic information is available.

Will OnlineOpen articles be marked in Wiley Online Library?
Yes. OnlineOpen articles will be identified by means of an icon.

Does the OnlineOpen program cover all funding agency archives, or only selected ones?
If the OnlineOpen fee is paid, the published version of the article may be deposited in any non-commercial subject or institutional repository. In addition, Wiley-VCH will deposit the published article in PubMed Central, with no post-publication embargo, and the article may be mirrored to PMCIs (PubMed Central International repositories, such as UKPMC and PMC Canada).

How is the OnlineOpen program related to the NIH's public access policy?
Wiley-VCH's OnlineOpen program goes further than the requirements of the NIH public access policy. Under that policy, the accepted version of an article is deposited by Wiley-VCH into PubMed Central, with a post-publication embargo of 12 months. If the OnlineOpen fee is paid, the published article is deposited by Wiley-VCH into PubMed Central, with no embargo, and the article can also be deposited into other non-commercial subject or institutional repositories.

Terms and Conditions for OnlineOpen articles

OnlineOpen articles are protected by copyright and are posted to repositories and websites by permission of the publisher. At the time of deposit, OnlineOpen articles include all changes made during peer review, copyediting, and publishing. Repositories and websites that host the article are responsible for incorporating any publisher-supplied amendments or retractions issued subsequently. OnlineOpen articles are also available without charge on Wiley's publishing platform, Wiley Online Library or any successor sites. A link from the article on the website or repository to the definitive published version of the article on Wiley's platform is required.

Use by non-commercial users

For non-commercial and non-promotional purposes individual users may access, download, copy, display and redistribute to colleagues OnlineOpen articles, as well as adapt, translate, text- and data-mine the content subject to the following conditions:

These rights include the right of "paternity" (also known as "attribution" - the right for the author to be identified as such) and "integrity" (the right for the author not to have the work altered in such a way that the author's reputation or integrity may be impugned).
  • Where content in the article is identified as belonging to a third party, it is the obligation of the user to ensure that any reuse complies with the copyright policies of the owner of that content.
  • If article content is copied, downloaded or otherwise reused for non-commercial research and education purposes, a link to the appropriate bibliographic citation (authors, journal, article title, volume, issue, page numbers, DOI and the link to the definitive published version on Wiley Online Library) should be maintained. Copyright notices and disclaimers must not be deleted.
  • Any translations, for which a prior translation agreement with Wiley has not been agreed, must prominently display the statement: "This is an unofficial translation of an article that appeared in a Wiley publication. The publisher has not endorsed this translation."

Use by commercial "for-profit" organisations

  • Copying, downloading or posting by a site or service that incorporates advertising with such content;
