Rapid speciation analysis of iron by on-line coupling of short column capillary electrophoresis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with collision cell technique

Bao-Hui Li and Xiu-Ping Yan presented a method for rapid speciation analysis of iron by on-line coupling of short column capillary electrophoresis (SC-CE) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Collision cell technique (CCT) was used to eliminate argon-based polyatomic interferences and a micromist nebulizer was employed to increase the nebulization efficiency. Rapid speciation analysis of Fe(II) and Fe(III) was achieved within 1 min by SC-CE. The precisions of migration time and peak area for Fe(II) and Fe(III) were in the range of 1.0-2.6% and 3.9-1.9%, respectively and the limits of detection (3σ) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) were 10.0 and 8.3 μg L-1, respectively. The results in the present work demonstrate the feasibility of the developed SC-CE-ICP-MS hyphenated technique for rapid iron speciation analysis. Compared with conventional CE-ICP-MS technique, the SC-CE-ICP-MS technique provides rapid and high throughput analysis for iron speciation.
