18_15b/2008Inside Front Cover: Fabrication of Low-Threshold 3D Void Structures inside a Polymer Matrix Doped with Gold Nanorods (Adv. Funct. Mater. 15/2008)

The image shows photothermally enhanced, low threshold micro-explosion and void generation inside a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix doped with gold nanorods as nano-heat-sensitizers. The efficient photothermal energy conversion was induced via matching the recording femtosecond pulsed laser wavelength to the surface plasmon resonance absorption of gold nanorods in near-infrared. This technique, reported by Kyongsik Choi and co-workers on p. 2237 can be applied to 3D optical patterning and data storage.
