21_18/2011Drug Delivery: Iron Oxide Nanotubes for Magnetically Guided Delivery and pH-Activated Release of Insoluble Anticancer Drugs (Adv. Funct. Mater. 18/2011)

Low solubility in water is an intrinsic property of many drugs, which hinders their clinical use. On page 3446, Guang-Hui Ma and co-workers present PEGylated iron oxide nanotubes. The rod-like shape facilitates cellular uptake, and the tube structure possesses a high drug-loading capacity. These nanotubes also exhibit a stealth effect to macrophages, great magnetic response, and low pH-activated release profiles, exhibiting promising potential for delivering insoluble anticancer drugs in clinical applications.
