On page 4285, Wenbo Bu, Jianlin Shi, and co-workers find that positive and negative lattice shielding effects coexist in lanthanide-ion-doped upconversion fluorescent nanoparticles, and can be used to advance the T1-MR contrast imaging and fluorescent imaging capabilities of watersoluble bifunctional nanocrystals. This results in highly enhanced magnetic and optical imaging modalities in comparison with previous literature reports.
