Mesoporous silica particles represent a novel, highly versatile class of drug-delivery systems. On page 106, Thomas Bein, Christoph Bräuchle, and co-workers utilize these materials as a host for the incorporation of short oligonucleotides as model gene therapeutics. The diffusion of a labelled oligo-nucleotide through a nanometer-sized silica pore is shown. Organic functionalization of the silica pore system offers a means to control oligonucleotide mobility and stability.
