Review Series: Cancer

EMBO Molecular Medicine - Cancer reviews series

Cancer research is still expanding and intensifying, as is our understanding of its underlying complexity and diversity. We have commissioned a new series of articles that focus on newer areas of research including intra-tumour heterogeneity, tumour cell dormancy and plasticity, improved animal models with stronger therapeutic value and tumour initiation. The emphasis, in line with the mission of EMBO Molecular Medicine will be on the translational aspects and proximity to potential therapeutic applications.

EMBO Molecular Medicine - Hacking cell differentiation: transcriptional rerouting in reprogramming, lineage infidelity, and metaplasia
Gonçalo Regalo, Achim Leutz
EMBO Mol Med (2013) 5:1154-1164
This review discusses cell reprogramming, epithelial metaplasia and hematopoietic lineage ambiguity, and highlights changes in cell fate that occur during tumor initiation leading to discrepancies between tumors phenotype and their cellular origin.
