2011 CNRS Bronze Medal Awarded to Karine Alvarez

Dr. Karine Alvarez, researcher with the Laboratory of Structure and Function of Biological Macromolecules at the Université de la Méditerranée-Aix-Marseille 2), was awarded the 2011 CNRS Bronze Medal for her contributions to antiviral research and for founding the Laboratory's Antiviral Medicinal Chemistry research team. Dr. Alvarez is in charge of the chemistry side of the Laboratory's research program, Viral Replication: Structure, Mechanisms and Drug Design, which is involved in studying the structure and function of the replication machinery in a number of human viral pathogens such as dengue, hepatitis C, HIV-1, measles, SARS, and West Nile virus.

The goal of Alvarez' group is the design and synthesis of compounds that are active against viruses for which treatments are not yet available and to generate antiviral agents that are more efficacious than those in current use. The group's research project has three primary themes: the design, synthesis, and analysis of the antiviral properties of α-thiophosphonate nucleotide analogues active against HIV and hepatitis B, the development of chemotherapies against flavivirus, and the synthesis of modified dinucleotide polymerase NS5B inhibitors of hepatitis C.
