7_05i/2012Inside Cover: Charge Matching on Designing Neutral Cadmium–Lanthanide–Organic Open Frameworks for Luminescence Sensing (Chem. Asian J. 5/2012)

Tuning charge distribution for a building block and creating an isostructural neutral framework from an anionic framework are rarely known to date. As described in their Full paper on page 1069 ff., Jian Zhang et al. present a simple replacement of metal from Cd2+ to Ln3+ in a building unit, which not only transforms an anionic microporous framework into a neutral one but also greatly enhances its functionality with respect to luminescence sensing of organic solvents and metal ions. The results reveal new insights into the importance of charges for the structural design of functional metal–organic frameworks.
