Biaryl Atropisomerism has been an important notion in chemistry since its discovery in 1922 and the conceptual foundation in 1933, and introduction of steric constraints at the ortho-positions of aryl units has been regarded as a requisite condition for the emergence of the atropisomerism. Hiroyuki Isobe et al. disclose in their Communication on page 1550 ff., that this is not always the case. In their belt-persistent nanohoop molecules, atropisomerism arising from macrocyclic ring strain has been observed.
