Tuning of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of push–pull systems featuring a 4,5-dicyanoimidazole acceptor and a ferrocene donor has been accomplished by a systematic variation of the bridging π-conjugated spacer molecules, as decribed by Filip Bureš et al. in their Full Paper on page 465 ff. The extent of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the donor to the acceptor units in these inorganic–organic hybrid chromophores was evaluated by X-ray analysis, electrochemistry, electronic absorption spectroscopy, second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements, and DFT calculations. Elucidation of the structure–property relationships revealed that the most crucial factors affecting ICT and the respective NLO properties are the length, composition, and arrangement of the π linker.
