      Kesterite solar cells have the promise to bring photovoltaics to the terawatt electricity scale in the 21st century. Electrodeposition (ED) is a mature industrial technology capable of fabricating large area metallic coatings with high throughput, low capital expenditure and low material usage. This work reviews the current ED-kesterite state-of-the-art by analysing three ED strategies, their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, with respect to their potential to achieve the highest possible solar cell efficiencies and knowledge transfer to industry.

      With in situ low-damage native oxide removal, nitrogen vacancy compensation, and the formation of a monocrystal-like nitridation interfacial-layer (NIL) with Al-N bonds, a high-quality Al2O3/GaN-cap interface has been obtained in the Al2O3(NIL)/GaN/AlGaN/GaN MIS-HEMTs. It is validated that the NIL is capable of preventing the formation of detrimental Ga-O bonds and enabling the realization of high-performance III-N based MIS-HEMTs that are highly desirable in power switching applications.

      For each of the investigated solar cell route, an efficiency of 19.5% or greater is achieved on wafers less than 100 μm thick, with a maximum efficiency of 21.1% on an 80-μm-thick wafer. The n-type high temperature route is then transferred to a pilot production line, and a median solar cell efficiency of 20.0% is demonstrated on 100-μm-thick wafers.

      The application of doped colloidal silicon nanocrystals sandwiched between hydrogenated amorphous silicon layers as emitters in silicon heterojunction solar cells may turn out to be an interesting system to exploit quantum confinement effects in solar cells or for the processing of low-cost and potentially printable emitter layers. Here we discuss the technological challenges of such an approach and present first solar cells that reach conversion efficiencies of 13.7%.

      Two-dimensional photonic nanostructures are fabricated by combining various lithography and etching techniques. The resulting nanopatterning possibilities range from periodic to random corrugations and from inverted nanopyramids to high aspect ratio parabolic profiles. Their experimental integration into a micron-thin monocrystalline silicon solar cell highlights the factors to be tackled, while optical and optoelectrical simulations suggest the optimal parameters for achieving advanced light trapping and therefore, a competing thin-film c-Si cell technology.
