      Nanostructures open exciting new possibilities to tune electronic and thermal properties of materials for specific applications. In particular, low-dimensional systems are good candidates for new, highly-efficient thermoelectric materials. In this short review, the authors summarize a density functional theory based approach to calculate charge and heat transport by combining Landauer transport theory with the Green's function formalism. It allows the study of electrical, thermal and thermoelectric properties in nanoscale systems, and recent results on several nanocarbon systems, i.e., graphene, graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes are presented.

      Organic metal halides provide absorber layers for solar cells, which may not only revolutionize the fundamental view on solution-processed semiconductor materials but also the feasibility of sustainable large-scale photovoltaics. Presently the chemical instability of these materials and the toxicity of predominantly used lead hinder commercialization. Replacement of lead and preparation of chemically more stable materials may represent a significant step towards a technical realization of perovskite solar cells.

      Combined thermoelectrical, structural and chemical characterisation of individual metallic and semiconducting nanowires is presented. In the temperature range between 4.2 K and room temperature the thermoelectrical properties are determined. Transmission electron microscopy yields the structural properties, the chemical composition and the morphology of the nanowires. This comprehensive study unambiguously allows identifying surface effects on the thermoelectric properties and scattering mechanisms for electrons and phonons.

      The microscopic origin of thermoelectric transport in semiconducting heterostructures shows up to be a promising tool to optimize the thermoelectric conversion efficiency. A consistent and convenient first-principles method is presented to fully describe the thermoelectric properties in the diffusive limit of transport for bulk systems and their associated heterostructures.
