Author Guidelines for regular submissions to physica status solidi (pss)

Manuscript preparation guidelines and templates pss is a high quality scientific journal striving to publish original information that is of current interest for a readership from the solid state physics and materials science community.
All pss journals use the same templates for all article types:
- Manuscripts must be written in English. See the FAQ on English language usage for details on pss' policy and More tools and resources for language improvement services.
- Original Papers in pss (a) and (b) have no length limit (typical: six to eight pages in print or in the template). For Contributed or Invited Articles in pss (c) please refer to specific information on the conference or project. pss (RRL) Rapid Research Letters are restricted to a length of 3000 words and 4 display items (tables or figures, not page-filling). In the manuscript template this should typically not exceed four journal pages.
- Accepted articles for pss (a), (b), and (RRL) undergo full typesetting during production. We strongly recommend using the template to gain an accurate length estimate and maximum control over the design. In contrast, articles intended for one of the special projects published in pss (c) must be prepared publication-ready (not camera-ready) in a template and according to the journal style, fully formatted and arranged fit for printing.
- Please prepare your manuscript exclusively as one single Word (DOC or DOCX), RTF, PDF or PS file (e.g. generated from LaTeX). You need to embed all figures and tables within this file. You may also upload LaTeX source files and separate figures (optional for Word, required for LaTeX submissions).
- Please include about four keywords in your manuscript. They should be comprehensive, reflect the essence and major aspects of the work, and be as precise as possible. Avoid expressions which are not generally known by the physics community, especially abbreviations.
- Fonts: Please use Times New Roman, Times, Arial or Symbol fonts as much as possible. Some fonts (e.g. Asian or Russian characters) may cause problems and should be avoided.
- Quantities and equations: In the text as well as in equations, figures or tables, physical quantities should be given in italic, vectors in bold italic, units in upright letters. Tabulated functions should be given in upright letters.
- Figures should preferably be submitted in full colour, but should also be easily readable on a black/white printout. They will generally be published in colour in the online version of an article at no cost. The print version in the journal (except personal reprints) will be black/white unless colour figures are purchased using the colour print authorization on the Reprint Order Form. Lettering/symbols should be large and clear enough in the final figure size. All labels must be legible (size 8pt preferred, 6pt minimum also for subscripts or superscripts). Draw a closed axes frame in diagrams. For numbers, use a decimal point instead of a comma. An 'eye-catching' abstract figure may be included in the manuscript. Suggestions for attractive cover pictures are very welcome.
- Please cite your own as well as other pss articles using the standard abbreviation Phys. Status Solidi followed by the capitalised series letter A, B, C, or RRL (without brackets). Ensure that all references in the bibliography are correct and complete (You can check them at CrossRef), and adhere to the standard INSPEC international journal abbreviation rules and the pss bibliography style.

Online submission Please use the online submission Editorial Manager for submissions to pss (a), (b), and (RRL). For conference proceedings in pss (c) see Special information section.

- We ask that all submissions are accompanied by a statement in the cover letter that the manuscript is original, unpublished, not being considered for publication elsewhere and is submitted with the consent of all co-authors. Authors must agree online to the Copyright Transfer Agreement during submission.
- Editorial Manager provides a plain text field for the cover letter addressing the editor. Here you can motivate your submission, make the above-mentioned statement, and provide further details on the submission and related work. During submission you may also suggest or exclude reviewers. In case of re-submissions of revised versions, the ‘Respond to Reviewers’ field takes your response to reports and list of changes. It is also possible to upload separate formatted cover letter and response files.
- Supporting information like videos, animations or other file formats to be published on Wiley Online Library should be mentioned in the cover letter as well as clearly referred to in the manuscript, and uploaded as supplementary files. Details and best practices for Supporting Information are available on the Wiley Author Services homepage.
- Upload of your manuscript will be acknowledged by e-mail twice. Follow the instructions in the first e-mail to check and confirm the PDF file generated by the online submission system by visiting your Editorial Manager page. The finalised submission will be acknowledged by a second e-mail message. Only after this second e-mail your submission will reach the desk of the Editorial Office.

Peer review and editorial process Peer review is done by referees selected from a continuously updated large international panel of scientists, with editorial evaluation and decision on the basis of the information received from the referees (See also recent Editorials and the policy statement on the Editorial information page).
The following information refer to regular submissions via Editorial Manager where technical issues are concerned (for special projects see Special information section):
The Editorial Office undertakes all efforts to keep the times required for review and handling of the manuscript as short as possible, however, without compromising the quality of peer review.
- The editors check all submissions regarding the topic as well as technical and formal requirements upon arrival. To warrant an appropriate starting point for the peer review process, we may ask for changes before passing the manuscript on to the referees. If the initial check reveals that a manuscript is clearly unsuitable for pss because of topical or quality mismatch, we will inform you promptly without external review.
- All articles in pss (a),(b), and (RRL) require positive approval by at least two independent referees. For publication in pss (c) one positive recommendation is sufficient. Manuscripts will be sent to one or more referees accordingly. See the checklist for reviewers for details on the criteria.
- Authors of regular submissions will receive our editorial decision (acceptance, minor revision, major revision, or rejection) with reports attached by e-mail.
- More often than not, authors are asked to revise their manuscript considering the comments and criticism of the referees before a final editorial decision can be made.
For efficient communication between authors, editors and referees during the remainder of the evaluation process, please consider the following issues upon re-submission:
- In the interest of short publication times please re-submit a revised version as soon as possible. Inform the Editorial Office if you cannot meet the due date. We reserve the right to consider late re-submissions as new, with new date tags and review procedure.
- Include your answer to the editor and to the referees in the cover letter field (plain text, i. e. no colour or bold face etc.). Start with a general response to the overall referee assessment and criticism – do not concentrate on the detailed point-by-point remarks from the referees only.
- Make sure to reference each referee comment you are answering (for example by numbering the referee comments, or by copying the corresponding passages from the reports into your response). Also outline the changes applied to the manuscript..
- If you need non plain-text components like extra data plots for your response, include them at the beginning of the manuscript file or send an extra file with your response by e-mail to the Editorial Office.
- Should you decide not to resubmit please let us know. Manuscripts with a pending revision continue to be under consideration at pss and are not free for submission elsewhere.

Production of accepted articles Upon positive conclusion of the peer review process for regular articles, the Editorial Office will send an acceptance message to the corresponding author and initiate the production process for the manuscript.
- The acceptance message will ask for missing original source files of text (Word, LaTeX) and separate figures (PS, EPS, TIF), if any.
- Suggestions for front or back cover picture illustrations at this point are very welcome. In the current cover design refreshed in 2011, a space of 21 cm x 21 cm is available. Ideally please provide a complete cover picture layout with background, leaving some space for paper title and author names as well as the usual elements of the pss title page. Note that a graphically appealing illustration rather than pure scientific data is required here, i.e. simple diagrams or multi-part, powerpoint-like figures are usually not suited for the cover. Please send your proposal by reply to the acceptance message and enquire for current rates.
- Prior to publication in pss (a), (b), or (RRL) authors will receive an e-mail with access details for downloading, or with the page proofs of the typeset article in PDF format directly attached. Please return your proof corrections within 5 days for pss (a) and (b) and within 48 hours for pss (RRL). Note that sending back a corrected manuscript file is of no use at this stage. The editors reserve the right to publish an article 'as is' if corrected proofs do not arrive in time.
- Please return the Reprint Order Form (PDF) together with your proof corrections. The form takes orders for colour hard-copy and PDF reprints (with standard or customized cover page) of your article, colour figures in the print edition of the pss issue, and high quality cover posters showing the front or back cover of any pss (current and back) issue in A1 or A2 size.
- At the time of publication, authors will receive a 300 dpi PDF file of their published article by e-mail.
- The article will appear online in the EarlyView service of Wiley Online Library, citable via Digital Object Identifier (DOI), and then be assigned to the next free publication slot in a pss issue with a volume and page number.
- Authors who have not yet confirmed the Copyright Transfer Agreement during online submission need to sign a hard copy which you will be asked to download after acceptance (A4 format, US letter format - please return signed form to the Editorial Office). See the special regulations for company-owned or government-funded work on the form if applicable.
- Wiley-VCH offers the option of making your article freely available to non-subscribers (Open Access) on Wiley Online Library. If your funding organization or institute encourages you to make use of this option, please complete the order form and forward a copy of your order to the Editorial Office.
