Special issue on Photonic Crystals: Optical Materials for the 21st Century

197_03/2003In the present topical special issue of physica status solidi (a), an overview of the current state of as well as future directions of Photonic Crystal research and technology is given. The authors of eight topical reviews cover the entire range from basic theoretical questions regarding wave propagation in these materials to the state of the art of Photonic Crystals in telecommunication applications.The Guest Editors of the present issue are Kurt Busch, Emmy-Noether Fellow for Theoretical Nano-Photonics at the University of Karlsruhe, and Ralf Wehrspohn, formerly working on porous materials and photonic crystals at the Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik Halle, now faculty member at Paderborn University. For his excellent research work, Professor Wehrspohn has recently been awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).The cover picture is an illustration of the extraordinary dispersive power available with photonic crystals, exemplified by the superprism effect.
