The Feature Article by Sylvia Wenmackers et al. on pp. 391–408 focuses on the development of diamond-based DNA sensors. The physical properties of chemically vapor deposited diamond make it an appealing platform for biosensors. Stable bio-functionalization can be achieved and various read-out strategies can be employed, including real-time and label-free electronic measurements of hybridization and denaturation events. The left hand side of the cover picture shows the molecular scaffold between the diamond surface and DNA strands (with fluorescent label). This covalent coupling method allows to predetermine the location of the DNA probes using shadow masks during the attachment of the organic linker molecule under UV illumination.
