The ion-beam assisted fabrication of arrays of uniformly distributed cones consisting of metal tips and a single-crystalline Si base, with the crystallographic orientation identical to the Si substrate, is described in the cover article by N.G. Shang and coworkers (pp. 309–315). The axes of the fabricated cones are well aligned with the direction of ion beams (side and top view of the arrays are shown in the top left and top right boxes of the cover picture, respectively). TEM studies show that the tapered pit-interface between the tip and the base (bottom left box) lively visualizes the ion impinging process and supports the left-standing model (bottom right).
