Front Cover: Diamond as a nanomedical agent for versatile applications in drug delivery, imaging, and sensing (Phys. Status Solidi A 9/2012)
The front-cover image, taken from the article by Han B. Man et al. (pp. 1811–1818), depicts a dual-layered PEGDA patch embedded with nanodiamond—drug complexes. Nanodiamonds, which have been loaded with the chemotherapeutic Daunorubicin (red), are being eluted from the center of the patch (purple) while mediating sustained delivery of therapeutics with reduced burst release. The outer ring (green) contains another chemotherapeutic, i.e. unmodifi ed Temozolomide. The multi-layered architecture of this patch is able to facilitate sequential release of both drugs while preserving drug activity.
The image also refers to the Feature Article by Han B. Man and Dean Ho (pp. 1609–1618), wherein the properties of nanodiamonds and diamond-based devices are discussed, with a focus on therapeutic delivery in addition to insight into their use in imaging, devices, implants/coatings, and biocompatibility.
