VIP: Single-Particle Spectroscopy of Alcohol-to-Olefins over SAPO-34 at Different Reaction Stages: Crstal Accessibility and Hydrocarbons Reactivity

Microporous solid acids, such as SAPO-34, are the applied catalyst materials for alcohol-to-olefins processes. In this work, in situ synchrotron-based IR and UV/Vis microscopy combined with isotopic labeled reactants have been used to identify the different hydrocarbon species formed as well as to assess the reactivity and accessibility of individual micrometer-sized SAPO-34 crystals. Major differences have been noted between the ethanol-to-olefins and methanol-to-olefins processes in terms of number of reaction stages and the spatiotemporal formation of distinct species, including methoxy groups, protonated dimethyl ether, poly-alkylated benzene carbo-cations and poly-aromatics.
