Author Services enables authors to track their article – once it has been accepted – through the production process to publication online. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production, and, when published online access the article for free. Guidelines  for Submission

The Journal of Leadership Studies welcomes finished papers from both scholars and practitioners. JLS uses Scholar One to manage all manuscript submissions as well as ongoing correspondence with authors. Manuscript Preparation

Articles should be based on original research or theory of organizations and leadership, written in a jargon-free, nontechnical style. Authors must ensure the accuracy of all statements—particularly data, quotations, and references—before submitting manuscripts.

Articles should appeal to a readership of leaders and constituents in private, public, government, and nonprofit organizations, in addition to academic researchers and educators from a variety of disciplines. The focus should be on leadership. Topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

Type all copy double-spaced using a font size no smaller than 10 pt. Margins should be at least one-inch wide. The title page should include the title of the article, the full names of the authors (including their degrees), their affiliations, full addresses, telephone, e-mail, and fax numbers, as well as a brief abstract of 200 words or less. In the case of multiple authors, please indicate which author is to receive correspondence and page proofs. To facilitate the blind review process, all author information should appear on the title page only.

Organization, Style and Submission

The title page including the abstract will be submitted as the Title Page file on the Scholar One web site. In the file, please supply a short author biography for each of the authors, providing the year and university from which they received their degree(s), highlighting any experience relevant to the submitted article, and a short mention of their current research interests. Financial or other support may be recognized in an Acknowledgment section.


The file submitted as the Main Document at the Scholar One site will be the article without author names. The article should include the abstract at the start followed by an Introduction section that includes details of the purpose, background, and your approach to the study. Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion sections should follow. Headings and article format may change depending on the nature of the submission.


The style should follow the guidelines given in the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2010). Footnotes and complex mathematical notation should be avoided when possible.

Citations and References 

The following are general guidelines for citations and references. Compliance with APA 6th edition guidelines, accuracy and completeness of the references are the responsibility of the author. Refer to literature citations in the text by name and year in parentheses. In the text, all authors’ surnames must be given for the first citation (unless six or more, then use only the first author’s surname followed by et al.). For all subsequent citations, just the first author’s surname followed by et al. should be used. Please include the original page number for each direct quotation and statistic; for example, Knight and Jones (1975, p. 74). Provide a double-spaced, alphabetized list of only those references cited in the text, using APA Publication Style. References to personal letters (providing the month, day, and year of the communication), papers presented at meetings, doctoral dissertations, and other unpublished material may be included. The following are examples of appropriately formatted references.

Figures and Tables.

Figures and tables should be formatted to comply with APA 6th edition guidelines. Clean copies of figures should be submitted at the Scholar One website. Upon acceptance of a manuscript for publication, authors should provide camera-ready artwork (original illustrations or good-quality photographic reprints), with the figure number and the authors’ names and addresses noted on (the back of) the illustration. If figures are submitted in color, it is possible to have them appear online in color, but they will be converted to grayscale for the printed issue. Figure captions should follow the Reference List within the body of the manuscript. Table notes should be keyed to the body of the table with letters rather than numbers or asterisks. All figures and tables should be cited in text using Arabic numerals.

Publication Process

Consideration of publication of a manuscript is given with the understanding that the manuscript has not been published previously or is under consideration for publication elsewhere.

The Editor is responsible for proofreading each issue and will only contact authors if clarification is needed; copyedited manuscripts will not be returned to authors.


After a manuscript is accepted for publication, authors are asked to sign a letter of agreement granting the publisher the right to copyedit, publish, and copyright the material. If there are multiple authors of a manuscript, all authors must complete and sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement.
