Carolyn AllardCarolyn Allard brings more than fifteen years of extensive experience in higher education publishing to The Department Chair. Since 1999, she has worked to expand the content base of and contributing authors to The Department Chair, which has led to a collaboration with a range of expert leaders and administrators. So many valuable contributions have been made to The Department Chair that two article compilations were published in 2011 to provide this best-of practical advice to a wider audience of readers.

The Department Chair is guided by a strong advisory board of well respected academic leadership professionals who provide firsthand perspective on the latest trends and challenges in the field. Carolyn also keeps up with the ever-changing world of academic leadership by staying in close contact with experts on various hot topics and by attending the Academic Chairpersons Conference, the leading conference in the field. These efforts provide readers with timely and practical advice, best practices, and proven strategies for handling such pressing issues as collegiality, legal issues, fundraising, budget cuts, managing conflict, change, faculty and student retention, faculty evaluation, assessment, and more.

The Department Chair has been recognized with an APEX award for publication excellence in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Award-Winning Issue Online

The Department Chair won recognition for publication excellence in the category of Newsletters - Design and Layout in the 2014 APEX Awards for Publishing Excellence.

APEX 2014 AwardThe winning submission was the Fall 2013 issue, which is now featured online free in honor of this year's achievement at the APEX Awards.

APEX Awards for Publication Excellence is an annual competition for publishers, editors, writers and designers who create print, Web, electronic and social media. Communications Concepts, Inc. sponsors the APEX Awards, and advises professionals who write, edit and manage business communications, on best strategies and practices. Concepts publishes business communication reports, including Writer's Web Watch, an e-report for professional communicators, and special reports on topics such as corporate writing and Web publishing.

In the Twenty-sixth Annual APEX Awards, 2,075 entries were evaluated and awards were given in 122 individual categories, within 11 main categories including: newsletters; magazines, journals and tabloids; annual reports; print media; electronic media; social media; websites; campaigns, programs and plans; writing; design and illustration; and one-of-a-kind publications.

According to the APEX 2014 judges, “The awards were based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the success of the entry in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence.”

Previously , The Department Chair won recognition for publication excellence in the category of Writing in the 2013 APEX Awards for Publishing Excellence.

The winning issue, available in full online, featured articles covering a wide array of topics including departmental civility, work-life balance for academic administrators, reflections on diversifying faculty; disparities in STEM Education, results of a five-year student of department chairs and more.
