The Department of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis has a long history of studying the role of formal democratic institutions in representation. More specifically, several members of the faculty, past and present, have focused their research on legislative politics — in the U.S. Congress, at the U.S. State and local level, in countries around the world, and in supranational institutions.

The department is proud to publish the Legislative Studies Quarterly, an international refereed journal devoted to research on representative assemblies. The Quarterly is the official journal of the Legislative Studies Section of the American Political Science Association. It was founded in 1976 by faculty members at The University of Iowa but today its editors and the members of its editorial board are drawn from major research universities throughout the United States and abroad.
