Meet the Editor
Alan W. Shindel, MD received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, USA. He went on to medical school at Washington University Medical School in Saint Louis and stayed on at Washington University to complete his residency in urology. In 2007, he started a three year fellowship in andrology at the University of California, San Francisco under the auspices of Tom Lue, Ira Sharlip, and Tom Walsh. In 2010 he joined the faculty of urology at the University of California, Davis in Sacramento, California, USA as an assistant professor of Urology and Co-Director of Men's Health.
Dr. Shindel's clinical philosophy is to provide a holistic, couple-centered approach to the evaluation and treatment of sexual health concerns. This approach applies to the individual patient, the couple, and in a broader public health context. His research interests include complementary and alternative medicine, lifestyle factors in promotion of sexual wellness, healthcare disparities and sexual minority groups, and epidemiological studies of human sexuality.
Open access journals are clearly the way of the future and Sexual Medicine is poised to become the premier modality for rapid dissemination of sexual wellness research with a regional and/or sub-specialty focus. Dr. Shindel is proud to be working with ISSM at the forefront of this new frontier in scientific communication.
