The polymorphism C10X in the CARD8 gene was significantly more prevalent in patients with bacteraemia compared to healthy individuals, whereas patients with negative blood culture, that is patients that exhibit severe diseases without detectable bacteraemia, displayed similar expression of C10X as healthy individuals. The patients were susceptible to infections caused by Gram-positive as well as Gram-negative bacteria.
