Guest Editor: Eileen E. Hofmann, Old Dominion University

This special issue addresses the current state of understanding of the impact of climate variability, climate change, and land-cover/land-use change on the transport and cycling of carbon and nitrogen to and within coastal ocean margins. The focus is on providing better understanding of how carbon, and specifically CO2, as well as nitrogen and other elements are cycled between the land, ocean, and atmospheric reservoirs on the continental shelves, and how the fluxes of these elements are likely to change in the near future as well as in the long-term. The special issue brings together results from studies along the US east coast and Gulf of Mexico which encompass a range of environments and approaches. These studies provide a synthesis of understanding that can be used to develop further research focused on forecasting changes in coastal ocean climate, carbon, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and provide the basis for assessing human activities and sustainable development in these regions.

Manuscripts are invited for a special section of JGR-Biogeosciences journal. All manuscripts should be submitted through the GEMS Web site. For additional information please contact:
