The Arctic tundra biome is the treeless fringe of land that surrounds the Arctic Ocean (Figure 1, inset map). The terrestrial area of the biome, excluding glaciers and alpine areas, cover about 5.14 million km2, an area about the half the size of the US or 3.4% of the total land surface of the world.
