Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres

Over the past four decades or so, advances in satellite remote sensing technology have resulted in the development of a wide variety of sensors and platforms of Earth observation. Flying at altitudes from a few hundred to a few thousand kilometers above the planet's surface, these sensors generate their data by absorbing the radiation reflected or emitted by the planet in their direction.
