An Overview of Geological Results From Mariner 9

On November 14, 1971, Mariner 9 became the first man-made object to orbit another planet. The 167-day flight to Mars demonstrated such precision in the flight trajectory that, even then, the mission provided evidence of a new era in space exploration: Mariner arrived at Mars within 50 km of the aiming point.
