Pd-porphyrins are used as cross-linkers to generate an oxygen-responsive polyamide hydrogel. The implantable hydrogel is stable in vivo for weeks, biocompatible, and the high density of the Pd-porphyrin enables transdermal detection. By changing Pd chelation for Cu and free base porphyrins, an intensity-matched companion hydrogel is developed for a ratiometric sensing strategy.

The integration of an injectable insulin-encapsulated nano-network with a focused ultrasound system (FUS) can remotely regulate insulin release both in vitro and in vivo. A single subcutaneous injection of the nano-network with intermittent FUS administration facilitates reduction of the blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetic mice for up to 10 d.

A multifunctional phosphorescent chemodosimeter based on an Ir(III) complex acts as a one- and two-photon-induced “OFF–ON” luminescent switch and a naked-eye perceivable probe for detection of biothiols based on 1,4-addition of biothiols to α,β-unsaturated ketone in living cells, and also can be used in time-resolved luminescent sensing and fluorescence lifetime imaging of biothiols in living cells.

A promising antigen delivery system based on quaternized chitosan hydrogel microparticles (Gel MPs) with multiple mechanisms of immunity enhancement is reported. Gel MPs loading with H5N1 split antigen induce robust humoral and cellular immune responses in mice. The multiple mechanisms of immunity enhancement have been confirmed to: a) form an antigen depot; b) increase antigen capture by immune cells; c) activate dendritic cells, thus potentiating antigen presentation.

A novel type of disulfide core cross-linked polyurethane micelles (CCL-PUMs) is reported. Although the CCL-PUMs loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) display lower cytotoxicity in vitro compared to free DOX or DOX-loaded uncross-linked polyurethane micelles, the drug-loaded CCL-PUMs exhibit the highest anti-tumor efficacy in vivo.
