VIP: Application of a Versatile Nanoparticle Stabilizer in Phase Transfer and Catalysis

The preparation of Au and Rh nanoparticles, which are stabilized by a hydrophilic cationic polymer, has been reported. The solubility of these nanoparticles is controlled by ion exchange, thus leading to good dispersion in a wide range of organic solvents and ionic liquids. As a result of this tunable solubility, the Rh nanoparticles show good activity and selectivity in hydrogenation of limonene. Modulation of the surface characteristics of the nanoparticles thereby extends the operating range of the metallic nanoparticle catalyst.
