Chemical Looping Combustion—The Role of Potassium: The cover picture illustrates the chemical looping combustion (CLC) process using Brazilian manganese ore, for which particles containing K/Al/Si-rich inclusions were demonstrated to have great potential for the catalytic combustion of solid fuels. The mechanism of this effective solid-fuel conversion was found to rely upon the catalysis of the steam–carbon reaction by potassium as described in the Full Paper by Martin Keller and colleagues at Chalmers University of Technology on page 273. CLC is a process in which a carbonaceous fuel is combusted by using a solid oxygen carrier, and it offers the prospect of cost-efficient CO2 capture in combustion processes.
