VIP: Non-Invasive Probing of Nanoparticle Electrostatics

Not what you might think: A new and non-invasive technique to probe the electrostatic interaction between surface-charged nanoparticles and a charged metal/solution interface shows that electrostatic effects are insignificant in all but very dilute electrolytes.

Mixed SAMs: The study of mixed self-assembled monolayers of perylenediimide and hexanethiol by cyclic voltammetry and absorption spectroelectrochemistry leads to a non-linearity of absorbance maxima as a function of the surface coverage. This surprising result could be supported by a change of the orientation of immobilized chromophores at low coverage, inducing a modification of the optical properties of the monolayer.

Does size matter? Novel nanocomposite thin films, consisting of amorphous chromium carbide, amorphous carbon, and nanoclusters of Ag, are deposited by magnetron sputtering. Large numbers of Ag nanoparticles form on the film surfaces due to diffusion and the oxidation potential of the nanoparticles shifts negatively compared to the standard potential for Ag+/Ag. The concept can allow for new electrode materials and find use in electrical contact applications.

Membrane disruption of bacteria: The differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) is used to detect the Pseudomonas aeruginosa signaling molecules after membrane disruption by the cationic surfactant. The method is applied to detect 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4-quinolone (PQS), 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline (HHQ), and pyocyanin (PYO) in clinical sputum sample of cystic fibrosis (CF) spiked with bacterial culture PAO1 (see picture).
