An Overview of Industrial Processes for the Production of Olefins – C4 Hydrocarbons

The survey describes industrial processes for the production of light olefins emphasizing on C4 hydrocarbons. Value chains in the petrochemical and the oil refining industry are strongly interrelated with regards to olefin production. An account is given for the production and the consumption volumes of the various C4 hydrocarbons on a global basis, including an outlook for alternative, petrochemical and bio-based processes for the production of C4 olefins.

A review is given of separation methods based on centrifugation focusing on the method of gas centrifuges or ultra-centrifuges to separate gases of different molecular weight, and centrifugal separators to separate droplets from gases. Elementary physical principles are used to formulate basic equations. Status of technology of each of the methods is illustrated by presenting actual cases of application.

This manuscript collects and analyzes for the first time the use of ionic liquids as extractor and reaction media for bioester synthesis. Specifically, the focus is on the application of ionic liquid technology as reaction media in the enzymatic synthesis of esters and also as extractor agents in the separation of reaction mixtures in the synthesis of esters.

Implementation of algal biofuels on commercial scale is still a challenge because of the higher cost associated with algae cultivation in photobioreactors. So, it is important to focus on engineering and design aspects of different photobioreactors to improve the biomass productivity.
