Current Controversy in Epilepsy: Epileptiform Discharges & Cognitive Development

Characterizing epilepsy outcomes has long been recognized to be more than simply counting seizures. However, the interplay between epileptiform discharges not associated with active seizures, with cognitive or developmental trajectories poses a unique treatment dilemma, and one for which cogent arguments can be made either in favor of or against initiating treatments. The series of articles in this Epilepsia Special Section addresses the important issues of the degree to which epileptic activity contributes to poorer developmental and cognitive outcomes above and beyond that which would be expected from the underlying etiology, which might influence treatment considerations.
